Pond Pump

Many ponds can survive without the use of pumping equipment. However, if you are looking to improve water quality and install other methods to keep your pond clean, then a pond pump is essential.

These units simply re-circulate water, which in turn will oxygenate a stagnant pond or will be useful in creating a waterfall or filtration system - there’s also the possibility to have the two combined.

Ultimately the unit and brand you choose needs to be relevant to the task ahead, but our pond experts will always be more than happy to offer advice, assess your pond's needs and provide a full quote.

Pond Filter

As with pond pumps, filter systems are not essential. However, if you are looking to improve water quality and clarity, this is an effective route to consider.

With the aid of the correct pump, a pond filter system is designed to collect waste from the pond. This system needs to run 24/7 to build up a high count of good bacteria.

The bacteria breaks down the waste and absorbs noxious chemicals produced by fish and the natural ecology of the pond.

Ultimately the unit and brand you choose needs to be relevant to the task ahead. Aquascape will always be more than happy to assess your pond's needs and provide a full quote.

Ultra Violet Clarifiers

As with the pump and filter system, ultra violet clarifiers (often referred to as a UVC) are not essential. However, if you are looking to improve water quality and clarity we would recommend that you employ this system in line with the appropriate pump and filter, particularly where fish are concerned.

The ultra violet clarifier is fed via water from the pond by the pump. The ultra violet rays burn algae cells - more often than not this is what you see as green water in your pond. Once these cells have been destroyed, the filtration system finds it easier to process these dead cells.

Ultra violet tubes within a clarifier have a six month full strength life. After 12 months, while the tube may well be alright, it has no algae cell killing capacity and needs to be changed.

It is best to change your ultra violet tube early in the season, (March-May), this way you get the full strength during the longest period of sunshine hours. Some people will insist on a change every six months, it depends how important your quest for gin-clear water really is!

When changing the tube its a good opportunity to take a close look at the quartz sleeve which surrounds it, as these units can become stained with dirt and limescale. The quartz sleeve may need cleaning or replacing.
