Planting Schemes for Ponds

Planting is where a pond truly comes alive, and getting the balance right is both an art and a science. The right mix of aquatic plants doesn't just look beautiful — it plays a vital role in maintaining water quality, providing oxygen, suppressing algae and creating habitat for wildlife.
We work with clients to design bespoke planting schemes that suit the style and scale of their pond, drawing on a wide selection of aquatic plants, the vast majority of which we grow ourselves. A well-balanced planting scheme will typically include a mix of:

• Deep water aquatics — including water lilies, which provide essential surface cover to reduce algae and shelter fish
• Oxygenating plants — submerged plants that release oxygen directly into the water and help keep it clear and healthy
• Marginal plants — planted in the shallower edges and shelves of the pond, these provide a naturalistic fringe and vital habitat for amphibians and invertebrates
• Floating plants — providing additional surface cover and shade without needing to root in the substrate

Coir Pallets for Ponds and Lakes

For larger ponds, lakes and commercial water features where establishing marginal planting over a wide area would be impractical by conventional means, coir pallets offer an elegant and highly effective solution.

A coir pallet is a section of natural coir fibre matting — similar in texture to a thick doormat — typically available in 1m x 1m or 2m x 2m sections. Each pallet is pre-planted with an agreed marginal species, allowing large areas of marginal habitat to be established quickly and reliably. Flotation devices are available to support the pallets at the water's surface, making them suitable for use in deeper water where traditional marginal planting wouldn't be possible.

Coir pallets are particularly well suited to lake restoration projects, nature reserves, golf courses and other commercial or amenity settings where large-scale natural planting is required.
